Toneri Hikawa-jinja Shrine
Name of facility | Toneri Hikawa-jinja Shrine |
Overview | It was built in 1200 when the divided spirit from Omiya Hikawa-jinja shrine, the highest shrine in Musashi province, was re-enshrined. The deity is Takehaya Susanoo-no-Mikoto and Kakebotoke, a sacred object is also enshrined. In the Edo period, it was a village shrine of the three villages of Toneri, Iriya, Asoma (current Soka), but it became the only village shrine of Toneri town when the other two villages were independent of Toneri Hikawa-jinja shrine by the time of 1887. The main shrine with excellent sculptures is completely built of the straight-grained zelkova wood, and it is covered all with the Karahafu of the roof. The most distinctive feature of the shrine is that all the pillars and the outer surface of it are decorated with extremely elaborate sculptures. (ascending dragon · descending dragon · a parent-child lion · peony · killing eight-headed serpent · opening the door of the cave of heaven · the descent to earth of the grandson of the sun goddess etc.) (Adachi registered tangible cultural asset) Now, Toneri Bunka Market is held in the precincts on December 23 in place of Gobou Market, which was the usual scene at the end of the year in Toneri. |
