| Overview | Ryutozan-Jokoin-Shouo-ji temple is the Jodo sect temple known for the principal deity as Kiamari Nyorai. According to the temple legend, when princess Adachi who came from a distinguished family, got married to a very rich man, she received criticism that her marriage gift was poor. She killed herself by jumping into Arakawa River with her 12 maidservants on her way back home. Her father visited the spiritual places of the countries and got a sacred tree from Kumano Gongen deity in Kii Province. When he floated it down Kumano-nada Sea, the tree was brought to its native place. Gyoki who was a Japanese Buddhist priest, sculptured 6 statues of Amitabha Buddha from the sacred tree and also made another one from the rest of it during his travelling around the country. This is the principal deity of the temple, wooden sitting statue of Amida Nyorai called Kiamari Nyorai (Tokyo designated tangible cultural property). A thatched house enshrined the deity was rebuilt as a temple by a holy priest in 1492. Afterward a vassal of the famous warrior clan came to Miyagi village and rebuilt the temple. He was given the land for a temple by the 3rd shogun TOKUGAWA iemitsu in 1649. In the precincts, there are many stone works including the tomb of princess Adachi, Kiamari Nyorai monument to convey the prosperity of six temples and a stone statue with six Jizo in relief etc. |
