Overview |
The merchant house built in the late Edo period reminds us of Senju-juku inn. It carried official loads by men or horses as a carrier in the Edo period. As a levy was imposed on a carrier depending on a frontage of a house, a long, narrow house with a width of 24 meters and 102 meters in depth, was built. The Yokoyama house has been a merchant family for generations since the Edo period, and kept a recycled paper store called Matsuya before the war. Jisuki-gami also known as Asakusa-gami, means a recycled paper which was made using used papers. It was used as materials for toilet paper, padding of kimono belt, kimono wrapping paper, thongs and paper dolls. The Yokoyama family purchased used papers from farmers in Umeda or Motoki and sold them in Nihonbashi district. The house has the pillar facing Nikko Kaido road with a sword cut by Shogi soldier, during the Ueno war in the Meiji Restoration. It still remains escaping from the Pacific War.
