Overview Washiouzan Shougakuin Houzouji temple is the Buzan school of Shingon Buddhism. The foundation of the temple was unknown, but it is said to be in the middle of the Heian period in relation to the legend of MINAMOTO-no yoshimitsu. The principal deity is Acala or Fudo Myoo. In the graveyard, there are Gorinto or Japanese pagoda (1622) (registered tangible cultural property in Adachi) and the oldest tombstone (1623) in Adachi, which has the image of Amida triad (designated tangible folk cultural property in Adachi) and so on. In the precincts there is a so-called Breastmilk Ginkgo tree that is believed to grant the wish that those who want to breast milk can have plenty of milk when wishing to the tree. As you take a hint of the temple name, the chief priest also worked at Otori-jinja shrine in the Edo period. He went out to the festival of Otori-jinja shrine by riding in a palanquin. In the precincts, there is Buddha hall enshrined a statue of Shaka Nyorai riding on the eagle, which was the main Buddha of Otori-jinja shrine until the Meiji period. This statue is said to be the guardian deity of MINAMOTO-no yoshimitsu called SHINRA saburo who played an active part in the Gosannen War (1083-87).
