Fugensan Shinbanzui-in Houju-ji temple is the Jodo sect temple, and the principal deity is the standing statue of Amida Nyorai. It was founded by Eshin Sozu in 992, as Reibutsusan Eshin-in Houju-ji temple of the Tendai sect located in Shimo-Ogu, Toshima-gun, Musashi province. In 1264, the temple changed its name to Fugensan Shinbanzui-in Houju-ji temple of the Jodo sect. In 1753, the temple moved to Yanaka in Toshima-gun from Shimo-Ogu and called itself Fugensan Shinbanzui-in Houju-ji. Anyo-ji temple founded in 1688, was the Honjo family temple where there are the family tombs, including Keishoin who was the real mother of the 5th Shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, her parents and her little brother, Honjo Munesuke who was the lord of Kasama castle. Both temples flourished under the protection of the powers that be, but they moved to the present location and merged in 1935 after the Great Kanto Earthquake. As Adachi registered tangible cultural properties, there are the wooden statue of Emperor Go-Fukakusa and the tomb of Keishoin who was the real mother of the 5th Shogun Tsunayoshi. Hotei-son is enshrined in the temple as one of Iko Seven Lucky Gods tour. |
