unsaule

It opened in 2014 as "Bistro un saule" and will be renovated in February 2024. It has been reborn as a restaurant serving creative cuisine that combines Japanese and modern cuisine with a French base.

"I want to spread the appeal of Japanese cuisine not only to the town of Gotanno, but to the world," says owner Ichiyanagi Akira. The "European-style clay pot rice" is cooked in seafood-rich paella broth, and is sure to have you coming back for more with its harmonious mix of Japanese and Western flavors. They are also particular about their steamed dishes, and the "Azumino Steamed Vegetable Platter" features a variety of freshly picked vegetables, with more than 10 types of vegetables lined up in a bamboo steamer at times. Other dishes include shumai and gyoza combined with European fish paste, and are full of ingenuity and playfulness. They also have a wide selection of alcoholic beverages, from wine to Hoppy, sake, and shochu. It's a restaurant where you can look forward to discovering new flavors.

The menu offers a variety of seasonal dishes, including the "Steamed Azumino Vegetable Platter" for 1,349 yen (photo left), which can be enjoyed with three types of sauce, including basil and lemon broth.
"Grilled Azumino vegetables with seared wagyu beef" 1,500 yen. Parmesan cheese is also added here.
"European-style clay pot rice with snow crab and seasonal vegetables" 2,199 yen. The crunchiness of the fresh vegetables is irresistible.

Garlic Cuisine Bar Garlic Carinderia

Owner Ronald Brian Shibata has been in the food and beverage industry for many years. Shibata originally wanted to run a bar, but he decided to open a garlic specialty restaurant after encountering Fukuchi White, a brand of garlic from Aomori Prefecture. "We were able to expand the range of our menu because of Fukuchi White. We want to spread the word that garlic is so delicious!" says Shibata. Fukuchi White is so watery that it is called fruit garlic, and is easy to eat and leaves no unpleasant odor.

"Karubonara" uses a lot of garlic paste and does not use milk or butter, so it has a rich flavor but is refreshing and not heavy. "Garlic Ajillo" allows you to enjoy soft and fluffy garlic. These are dishes that garlic lovers and those who don't like garlic will want to try.

"Karubonara" 1,495 yen, "Garlic Ajillo" 1,100 yen, "Garlic Toast" 780 yen. Draft beer "Heartland (medium glass)" is also available for 750 yen.
"Fukuchi White" is prepared by boiling it once and then deep frying it to make it chewy. You can see the size of each piece clearly.
"I love serving customers," says Shibata-san. As he runs the shop by himself, we recommend making a reservation in advance.

Senkei Naito

Just outside Gotanno Station, in a corner lined with restaurants, you'll find Senkei Saiito. The restaurant was opened in 2014 by owner Chiaki Naka.

"We want our customers to enjoy the deliciousness of seasonal foods," says the owner, and the menu, which mainly features seafood and vegetables, changes daily. The "Red Shrimp Namero" served at the time of our interview was a dish that was created based on feedback from regular customers. The seasoning is kept to a minimum to bring out the flavor of the shrimp, and the sweetness and umami of the shrimp make for an addictive taste. It makes you want to drink more and more.

In addition to the 15 or so main types of sake, the bar also serves Adachi Beer, which began selling in February 2024. Chiaki Curry, which was launched to raise funds for the Great East Japan Earthquake and participated in the 2023 Gotanno Curry Marathon, is also popular.

"We've been able to continue because we're in Gotanno," says Naka-san. It's no wonder that this bar is loved by local drinkers, and it's a place that fills both your stomach and your heart, overflowing with love for the community.

From the back: Daikon Salad for 830 yen, Adachi Beer Pale Ale for 750 yen, Motsunabe Stew for 450 yen, and Red Shrimp Namero for 700 yen.
"Chiaki Curry" 780 yen. This curry was created through repeated improvements to the one sold at the mobile shop before the store opened.
Naka-san has a deep connection to Gotanno, as it is close to his hometown. "I think it's a town with many people who treasure their favorite stores."
