Cool and happy shaved ice

  • August 14, 2024

Shaved ice is especially delicious on hot days. We'll introduce three places where you can enjoy shaved ice that makes the most of the unique strengths of each store: a coffee shop, a pastry shop, and a greengrocer.

Coffee Hannari (Coffee Hannari)

The owner, Yoko Nakata, renovated her warehouse into a coffee shop in 2010. Since 2021, she has been serving 3-4 types of shaved ice, the most unique of which is the "Coffee" flavor, which is unique to a coffee shop that prides itself on its coffee. The ice contains coffee jelly and vanilla ice cream, so you can enjoy it until the very end without getting bored.

The coffee is made using beans from Ogawa Coffee in Kyoto, where Nakata used to live nearby. "We're thinking about creating something that can only be eaten at this store," says Nakata, and the food menu features a lineup of ingenious dishes such as "coffee zenzai" and "Napoli udon." The cakes, made by Nakata's eldest daughter Mika in response to customer requests and only available on Saturdays and Sundays, are also popular.

Coffee Hannari is a popular place for local interaction, and regularly hosts an event called "chit-chat care." Many people visit not only to enjoy delicious coffee and food, but also to chat with the staff.

The shaved ice "Coffee" is 850 yen and is topped with plenty of coffee syrup and cinnamon.
"Egg Sandwich (ham and egg)" 550 yen and "Hannari Blend" 550 yen.
Nakata brews coffee using a siphon.

Patisserie Ravienreve (Patisserie Ravienreve)

This Western-style pastry shop was opened in 2014 by Daisuke Kitanishi, a pastry chef who trained at a famous shop in Paris and has won one of Japan's biggest contests. Kitanishi explains why he chose Umejima as the location for his shop, saying, "It's a town I live in and love." The cakes and parfaits, which are carefully crafted to suit the tastes of this family-friendly area, boast gorgeous appearances and simplicity that isn't too complicated. There is also a wide selection of baked goods, chocolates, and other sweets available for purchase.

The number of shaved ice varieties has gradually increased, and there are currently over 10 varieties, all of which use natural ice. The "Strawberry Mille-feuille" is topped with plenty of fresh cream and pie crust, and is filled with strawberries, making it feel like eating a cold cake. This is something that can only be enjoyed at a patisserie. You can of course use the eat-in space in the shop, but another great point is that you can also get it as take-out.

The "Strawberry Mille-feuille" is 2,000 yen for a large one (see photo) and 1,500 yen for a small one. It is a shaved ice version of the cake of the same name.
The "Japanese Chestnut Mont Blanc" (680 yen), which uses Rihei chestnuts from Kumamoto Prefecture, has been popular since the store opened.
"I think every day about what can only be done in this town," says Kitanishi.

Pau-el Kohoku store

"Vegetable Maruhei," a delivery-only fruit and vegetable store that also operates a takeout salad shop in Tokyo, opened a shaved ice shop in 2023. "The members shared ideas, went around to many stores to try them, and made many prototypes," said staff member Hirono. He said that they went through a lot of trial and error to come up with the shape of the ice and how it was placed to bring out the flavor of the fruit.

There are five to six kinds of shaved ice, all of which feature fruit as the main ingredient. They use ice from the long-established pure ice manufacturer Onoda Shoten, and are topped with homemade fruit sauce and condensed milk that is full of fruit juice. If you can enjoy fresh fruit selected by professionals in season in such a luxurious way, it's no wonder that there are customers who come to eat it almost every week.

The interior of the store is full of playfulness, with the store logo designed by the president himself and original "Gourmet Award Nominated" stickers, making the wait enjoyable.

"Melon" is 1,450 yen, topped with plenty of round, red and green fleshed melon. You can also add condensed milk for an additional 150 yen.
There are also original Pow-el novelty goods available, such as cute socks with a cactus pattern.
"On hot days they melt quickly, so please eat as much as you can," says Hirono.
