A sweet shop worth stopping by on your way back from visiting Daishi-sama

Nishiarai Daishi Temple, known as one of the "Three Great Temples for Warding Off Bad Luck in the Kanto Region," has many delicious sweet shops along its front gate. We will introduce shops that offer comforting sweets, from long-established shops with a long history to newcomers that have opened in recent years.

Nakadaya

Nakataya, located right in front of Nishiarai Daishi, is said to have been founded in Bunka 2 (1805) and boasts a history of over 200 years. "It's said that even back then, kusadango was popular as a kind of fast food," says owner Kaneko.

The Kusadango is made with steamed and crushed Japanese mugwort leaves, so you can enjoy the different shades of color and the strength of the scent depending on the day. You can choose from three types of bean paste: smooth bean paste, whole bean paste, and salted bean paste, and you can also have a mixed serving for an additional 100 yen. The salted bean paste, which was added in recent years, is popular for its beautiful pale color and refreshing taste.

In addition to Kusadango, there is Kuzumochi, which keeps relatively well, and from 2025, Kusadango-style financiers will also be available! "We have a lot of tourists from overseas, and we wanted to create a new specialty for people who don't like red bean paste," says Kaneko. Both the historic Kusadango and the new product that inherits its flavor are perfect souvenirs from Nishiarai Daishi.

Taguchiya Confectionery Shop

Yokan, dorayaki, and jo-namagashi are lined up in the store's display cases. Taguchiya Kashiho, which was founded in 1939, sells a variety of Japanese sweets, including souvenirs such as kusadango and kuzumochi. "When we first opened, we made rice crackers and sold Western-style sweets," says owner Taguchi. They have continued to update their products to keep up with the times, reviewing each product and changing the way they are made and even changing the patterns on their wrapping paper. In response to a request for a place where customers could enjoy their meals at their leisure, a coffee shop was added during the store's renovation about 20 years ago. Kuzumochi, one of the most popular products, has a smooth texture that goes well with fragrant soybean flour, and the homemade brown sugar syrup cooked in a large pot is also rich.

"The approach to the shrine has changed a lot, but many customers have been stopping by on their way home since way back," says Taguchi. The restaurant offers a relaxing time with its flavor that has been loved for a long time, even as it has been updated over the years.

The "Kusa dango and kuzu mochi set (with tea)" served in the coffee shop costs 600 yen.
The thick "dorayaki" with lots of bean paste is 230 yen, and the "kurigoromo" which is a chestnut wrapped in egg yolk paste is 250 yen.
Taguchi loves sweets, both Western and Japanese.

Sweets shop Nagomi-an

Nagomi-an, which joined the group in a corner of the approach to the shrine in 2022, is a sweet shop run by the Okuyama couple. The menu, which is all handmade, offers a wide range of items to satisfy any mood, including shaved ice made from natural ice, lunch created in response to requests, alcohol, and snacks.

The homemade anmitsu is made with carefully selected ingredients, including agar made from agar seaweed from the Izu Islands, smooth bean paste made from red beans from Tokachi, Hokkaido, and brown syrup made only from the local brand "Okinawa brown sugar." The taiyaki dough is also made from a blend of several types of flour, giving it a crispy exterior and a chewy texture inside. "Taiyaki is great when it's hot, but the flavor settles down when it cools down," says Okuyama. "Some customers tell us they came to the store to buy something because the souvenirs they received were delicious, and hearing those words is very encouraging. I would like to open stores in other areas one day."

"Homemade seasonal strawberry anmitsu" is available during strawberry season and costs 1,150 yen.
"Nagomitai Yaki (Tokachi An)" is filled to the brim with plenty of bean paste, priced at 230 yen.
